Review: Revlon Colorstay Ultimate Liquid Lipstick: Rouge-a-levres liquide Labial Liquido, Photos, Swatches
I bought this particular lip color while my hunt for getting a long wearing lipstick, as I was quite fascinated with the concept. The moment I asked the SA at Health and Glow to get me such lipstick, she directed me to this particular product. I saw the swatch and it looked a bit glittery and glossy to me, which made me wonder how can this stay for long duration on my lips with such glossy finish. But, the SA told me that this would dry up and become matte after some seconds.
Nevertheless, I bought it. It has been a couple of months now since I've been using it and I'd been postponing the review till date. One of my readers - Dia requested me to post a review so here it comes!
Below is the swatch and how it looks on my lips:
This technique has worked quite well for me for my daily office routine. The lipstick and the lip color stay good together for 4-5 hours and then when chipping starts; I re-apply the Streetwear lipstick again. This preserves the moisture and doesn't make my lips look like a dry scrub.

What does Revlon say about its Colorstay Ultimate Liquid Lipstick?
Revlon Colorstay Ultimate Liquid Lipstick is the first and only one-step lipstick that has it all with comfortable food-proof wear for up to 12 hours. No topcoat or touch ups required, shades give coverage soft satin shades.
My experience with the product:
I bought the product as SA kept on pestering me for it, but I was still skeptical about its 12 hours long stay. Anyways, so I brought it home and tried it on my lips. The color was decently pigmented as the way it was in the swatch and glided well on my lips with the doe foot applicator. However, after a few seconds, it dried out completely without leaving even a hint of moisture on my lips. I was shocked a bit. It was a feeling as if my lips were sealed by some glue.
The moment I opened my mouth wide as if to yawn, the lip color broke out on my lips like some thin paint and I could see some fine lines on my lips that were devoid of the color. I had to apply the color again on it. It looked really weird. I feel that with such products, companies should provide a user manual on how to apply and use them properly. You can not wear this lip color without a gloss!

So, below are some pros and cons:
Pros:
1) The lip color bottle and applicator are quite handy and helpful in the application.
2) Decent pigmentation.
3) Long wear for sure with the formula it has.
4) The lip color is non-transferable. It feels and works like a paint, so you'd never get any lip prints anywhere on your coffee cups or on your boyfriend's/hubby's cheeks (lips)!.
5) The food proof label is correct. The lip color doesn't come off with eating or drinking.
Cons:
1) The finishing is more than simple matte. It feels like paint on my lips.
2) You can not wear it just like that and go out. You need to add certain more steps to wear this effectively.
3) The 12 hour claim is a bit too much. It comes out in small chips and particles within 5-6 hours of wear.
4) Price: I don't think it deserves to be that pricey!
I kept on wondering for initial few weeks as to how to wear this properly without looking like a mono-actor. I tried certain techniques like first wearing a balm and then applying the lip color, followed by a gloss. It worked well to some extent, but the chipping would start the moment balm would get absorbed by my lips. So, now I use below two techniques to wear this for at least 4-5 hours properly:
First Method:
1) Apply balm, followed by a clear gloss.
2) Apply this lip color and let it dry (stick) on your lips.
3) Re-apply gloss.
This keeps your lips moisturized enough, and helps in wearing the color for some duration effectively. The only problem with this solution is that the moment that 'chipping' starts; you are left with no other option but to rub and wash this lip color off your lips, and then start the whole process again. Quite difficult for office going people.
Second Method:
1) I bought a Streetwear lipstick of almost similar shade which is called "Pink Pie" and apply it on my lips.
2) Apply the lip color on top of this, followed by a gloss.

Overall verdict: I'd prefer to buy other normal lipsticks that can be reapplied and carried off easily, than this one. It might be helpful for college students who don't get time for touch ups in between their rush to go from one class to another. However, I'd advice them to keep a moisturizing lip balm and tissue ready with them in case they are using this lip color. Lip balm will add the moisture and the tissue will help in wiping off the bits and pieces of this lip color after a few hours of wear.

Will I purchase it? No!

Hi there, the first pic is looking so beautiful, but it indeed gets dry and wrinkly in the second pic...
ReplyDeleteapart from the 2 techniques you came up with, i have another suggestion -
apply a good balm first and then apply the colour. maybe then the moisturised look will remain as the balm will act as a barrier and prevent the colour from drying on the lips like that...
@SCARLETT
ReplyDeleteHi scarlett..the first technique is of balm only..the only problem is that once the balm gets absorbed by the lips, the drying and cracking of this lip color comes back!! :(.. So I had to go with the second technique. That way the lip color stays a bit normally for a longer duration!! Thanks! :)
@calicoaster
ReplyDeleteI mean even without the gloss, the balm doesn't stay for long na!! and the lipstick becomes all stained!!
The gloss looks pretty but very pricey. Anyways great review!! Very helpful :D
