Did you know that diamonds were first discovered in India several
thousand years ago?
Irrespective of the shape or cutting style, a diamond with a
perfect make will excite you, while a diamond made with poor skills will look
lifeless and lack its sparkle. Apart from the cutting styles for brilliance,
diamonds are also cut to make them appear bigger.
Diamonds can be availed in different cutting styles – Step
cut, brilliant cut or mixed cut.
- A brilliant cut utilizes many facets, generally kite-shaped and triangular, set in a pre-defined way to generate maximum brilliance.
- A step cut utilizes lesser facets, generally rectangular or trapezoid in shape, set in mostly linear pattern. Though these cuts are less brilliant than the “brilliant cut”, step cut diamonds can create extremely elegant stone with a classic personality.
- A mixed style utilizes facets from both brilliant and step cuts.
Various cutting styles of a diamond can also impact its
durability. If a stone has experienced any cutting faults, it gets weakened and
is more prone to breaking or chipping.

A conventional, modern round brilliant cut diamond has
around 58 facets. There are 33 on the
top, 24 on the bottom and a culet – “The point” at the bottom most, which
basically is another tiny facet. Round brilliant cut stones which are smaller
in size are called “full-cut” to differentiate them from “single cut stones”
that have only 17 facets. The “Swiss cut” stones have 33 facets.
It is truly said that “Diamonds
are a woman's best friends”. While preparing for my marriage when we
started selecting the wedding rings,
I chose to go for the ones that had diamonds in them, even though they looked
simpler than designer pure gold rings, and had three tiniest diamonds that we
could afford. Still, the aura of diamonds is something I always feel attracted
to and that definitely makes them my top choice in jewelry.
With so much fascination and grandeur associated with
diamonds, an international standardization and certificate is must to check
that what you are buying for your special occasion is perfectly genuine. With
advancement of technologies, we now have various online websites where you can
avail your perfect piece of jewelry whether it is diamond engagement rings or solitaire rings, and
you can design them yourselves.
