A Few Rules On Wearing Hair Fascinators
There’s nothing like one fetching hair fascinator to make you feel like you’re the most stylish and elegant lady in a room. With a pretty little fascinator festooning your head, even the simplest dress can become a sophisticated outfit.
But with all their fabric, feathers, flowers and shapes, it’s easy to go overboard with a fascinator. More than a few have committed a fashion faux pas because of their hair fascinators (just ask Princess Beatrice), but these mistakes can be avoided by just following a few simple rules.
Basic Guidelines for Wearing Hair Fascinators
Hair Fascinators can be in any design and can be worn any way the wearer chooses, but like most other fashion accessories, there are certain boundaries. Fashion is all about taking risks but sticking to certain guidelines will mean the difference between looking stylish and looking downright ridiculous. Here, we enumerate some of the pivotal points you need to follow to keep looking fabulous in a fascinator:- Fasten that fascinator!
- Fascinators have different ways of holding on to your head. They can be attached through combs, headbands or elastics. Headbands are pretty secure but elastics and combs can be slightly challenging to keep on especially if it’s a windy day. To make sure they stay in place, use pins and do not, by any means, place the elastic under your chin! Doing so would be the total opposite of sophistication and make you look like you’re headed to a children’s party.
- Position appropriately.
- For most women, positioning their fascinators in the front or on the right side of their head is the norm. But be warned: if your hair part is on the left side, your fascinator won’t take centre-stage, your hair part will. To make sure your fascinator looks flattering, comb over your part, reposition your part or simply position the fascinator over your hair part. That way, it isn’t covering up a huge portion of beautiful hair and your roots aren’t over-exposed on the other side.
- Don’t over-fascinate.
- When it comes to fascinators, bigger and bling-ier is not always better. Royalty and celebrities may be able to pull off jaw-dropping fascinators, but if you are neither it’s best to tone down on the design of your fascinator. Avoid overly eccentric and odd shapes; simple, classic shapes are always best. Also, avoid too many large feathers and excessive gems. If you must have them, make sure you strike a compromise: an odd shape in a relatively smaller size and without feathers, or several gems but limited feathers.
- Consider the season.
- As with most fashion accessories, seasons are a big consideration when choosing what type of fascinator to wear. Autumn colours, browns and oranges, work well in autumn while brighter, livelier colours work well for springs and summers. Whites work well for almost every season, but they are particularly pretty and pristine in the winter. Opt for light materials, like light fabrics and straw during the warmer months.
- Don’t make it an everyday accessory.
- You wore one during your cousin’s wedding, another one to your grandfather’s funeral, and pretty soon you love wearing them so much, you find ways and excuses to wear them almost every day. While there may be some hair fascinators which aren’t as formal or fancy as others this certainly doesn’t mean that you can wear them every single day. Wearing fascinators is only deemed appropriate for certain occasions:
- Weddings
- Funerals
- Races
- Galas
- Cocktail Parties
- Luncheons
If you want something to liven up your locks every day use jewelled clips instead- they’ll give you a little bling without making everybody you meet think you’re headed to a funeral.
- Match your fascinator with your hairstyle. Sleek hairstyles like chignons and sleek ponytails call for smaller fascinators with a more refined look about them. Loose updos can be matched with small to medium fascinators, while hair that’s down looks great with larger fascinators. Sleek hairstyles paired with smart fascinators give off a clean, ultra formal look while loose hairstyles with feathered hair fascinators give off a more carefree, funky look.
