Five Fashion Rules Plus Size Women Should Live By
The number of plus size women in the United States are growing, and retailers can no longer deny the need to stock plus size clothing. Plus size brands have grown significantly over the past few years, so there are many plus sized women who are just discovering fashionable clothing that’s made for their size. There’s nothing wrong with needing a little direction, all you need to do is make that you follow these few easy to follow fashion tips.
Know your true size
It can be difficult to find your true clothing size when so many retailers practice vanity sizing, but if you want to be comfortable and look fabulous in your clothes you need to wear the right size. Clothes that are larger than your true size may feel comfortable, but they can make you look bigger than you actually are. Bigger clothes also tend to be baggy in all of the wrong places, and clothes that are too loose can make your outfit look a little sloppy. Smaller sized clothing isn’t any better. They’re not only uncomfortable to wear, and they can also create visible panty and bra lines. If you want to ensure that you’re finding the right sized clothing, get a tailor to take your measurements.
Expand your color pallet
Black may be a slimming color, but eventually you’ll get tired of having such a monochrome wardrobe. Some plus sized women stick to darker colors because of their slimming effect, but you can combine some eye popping colors with more subdued shades to create a unique look. Start off slowly by pairing your go-to outfits with a bright accessory. Colorful scarves, bright jewelry, and even some eye-popping shoes can bring any outfit to life. As you get more comfortable with bright accessories, move on to incorporating a bright colored shirt or an eye-catching blazer. Remember, black and navy go well with a variety of different colors, so don’t be afraid to experiment!
Don’t immediately write off non plus size stores
After years of living in Torrid and Lane Bryant the thought of going into a regular retailer may seem pointless, but you’d be surprised at how many brands have expanded their plus size offerings. Gap carries up to an XXL and 20 in their online store, and even Banana Republic and H&M have started carrying larger sizes. There’s nothing wrong with shopping at your old favorites, but don’t feel like you can’t find other clothing in other stores.
Find the right bra
The right bra can make all of the difference in your outfit. Remember how we were discussing finding your true clothing size? When you’re visiting the tailor, ask them if they know somebody who specializes in fitting women for plus size bras. A surprising amount of women are wearing the wrong bra size, and even more fail to get fitted for bras as often as they should. Some women think that bra sizes are set once they finish puberty, but your age, hormone levels, weight loss, weight gain, and having children can drastically alter your size. Avoid going for a fitting in a large chain store like Victoria Secret. VS and other stores are guilty of vanity sizing their bras, and if you go there it’s very likely that you’re going to walk out with a bra that’s either too big or too small to fit your bust.
Look online
Since you’re reading this content on a blog it’s safe to assume that you already know all about the wonders of online shopping, but there are some plus sized women that aren’t taking advantage of just how many online only plus sized stores there are. Some people are wary of buying things online because they’re worried about not finding the right size, but if you find out your true size you’ll know exactly what size clothing you need to buy.
