One of the most important lessons I've learned after getting many wrong foundation shades is that you should never try to get a foundation shade for yourself before doing your homework. It is always good to have an SA or a close friend to decide the closest match of foundation for you. But, what when you are left on your own to do that? Where to start from? With so many variations in the skin tones, especially in India, you definitely need to know some real foundation basics that can help in deciding your perfect shade and how to go about it.
How to decide the perfect shade?
I've wasted lots of money in getting the wrong shades and it took me sometime and losses to learn my lessons. Getting a wrong foundation shade is something that can spoil your overall look (and mood too!!), especially for people like me,
whose skin color keeps on changing big time in summers and winters. I travel a lot, and usually alone so it took me sometime and a lot of mistakes and then internet browsing to learn how to select my own foundation shade when I am left on myself to decide. While shopping at Germany, I never find any SAs or friends to assist me so if you are planning to go there, then these tips might come handy:

Basically, check on the underside of your wrists. That is the skin where your undertones are most prominent. People with warm tones should go with yellow and orange shades, whereas those with cool tones should use red and blue shades.
If the veins on your inner wrist are a greenish shade, then you’ve warmer tones. If they look bluer, then it means you have cool tones.
Tie a pink scarf first, and then an orange scarf around your neck. If you feel that you look better in the orange scarf, then gold or yellow tones are best for you. If you look better in the pink scarf then pink undertones will work better for you. This applies to everyone regardless of ethnicity, hair color or eye color.
- Fair skinned people generally look best in blue-based shades.
- Medium skinned beauties can wear most shades.
- Dark skinned lovelies can look most flattering in yellow-based shades.
Try a gold necklace and then a silver one. If you feel that you look better in gold, then your skin tones are warm. If silver flatters you better then your skin tone is cool.
